[linux_var] Installazione Ubuntu e dischi RAIDO (con OS preinstallato) - dualboot

Ciao a tutta la comunità Linux di Varese.
Il motivo di questo messaggio è molto semplice, sto disperatamente cercando un aiuto per installare Ubuntu sul mio XPS che monta 2 HD in raid0.
Sembrerebbe semplice ma non lo è visto che vorrei "tenere" anche Vista (che mi sono trovato preinstallato e che uso a solo scopo ludico).
Mi rivolgo a voi dopo aver inutilmente tentato tramite i canali ufficiali di Ubuntu (chat, forum, wiki ecc ecc ecc).
Al momento me la sono cavata installandolo su HD USB esterno (è quasi un anno e mezzo che uso Ubuntu in questo modo) ma vorrei veramente e finalmente metterlo sui 2 HD interni.
Premetto che ho già creato "lo spazio" non allocato necessario ma l'installer di Ubuntu ovviamente non riconosce nulla delle partizioni installate.
In rete (wiki) ho trovato delle istruzioni veramente utili per procedere ma da quello che vedo necessitano di adattamenti in funzione della mia configurazione, se non vi spiace le incollo qui:


"Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) Tips

In Intepid, dmraid is now in the 'main' respository, and can be installed without recondfiguring apt. Once dmraid is running, the live installer can handle installing to the raid. Ubiquity will fail when installing grub, and will not automatically add dmraid to the new installation. These need to be done manually.

In Short

    *

      Boot the Ubuntu Live CD and select Start Ubuntu without changes to the computer
    *

      From a terminal, run sudo apt-get install dmraid
    * Check /dev/mapper to ensure the raid was correctly detected
    * Run the installer (ubiquity), install as normal. Deselect installing grub - it will just fail anyway (but it makes no real difference if you don't)
    *

      From a terminal, run sudo chroot /target
    *

      Install dmraid to the new installation by running sudo apt-get install dmraid from the chroot environment.
    * Install grub as per above instructions.

In Long without detail as above (2008-10-26 update)

Pulling from the instuctions above (Thanks Community!) setup Ubuntu 8.10 RC on an Nvidia fakeraid as follows:

   1. Boot the Live CD
   2. Enabled the community content
   3. Opened terminal
   4. "sudo apt-get install dmraid"
   5. "sudo modprobe dm-raid4-5"
   6. "sudo dmraid -ay"
   7. "cd /dev/mapper"
   8. Check for existence of my raid 'nvidia_cjbgcjgd' by running "ls"
          * In my case:
                o nvidia_cjbgcjgd1 was existing Windows partition. Had a bunch of unpartitioned 'free space' after this partition.
   9. Started Ubuntu installer "ubiquity"
  10. In the installer, it saw the raid volume. Told it to do the 'guided' partitioning on the raid volume and create partitions on the existing free space.
  11. Under advanced, told it not to install grub.
  12. After install, the "/target" mount point was "busy" so re-booted the LiveCD and re-ran steps 1-8 so could add dmraid to the installation and manually install and configure grub. Keep running steps 1-8 until get it right.
  13. "sudo fdisk nvidia_cjbgcjgd" and do a list to see how the partitions were setup.
          * In my case:
                o nvidia_cjbgcjgd5 was added as the linux partition. nvidia_cjbgcjgd6 was added as the swap partition.
  14. "sudo mkdir /target"
  15. "sudo mount nvidia_cjbgcjgd5 /target"
  16. "sudo mount --bin /dev /target/dev"
  17. "sudo mount -t proc proc /target/proc"
  18. "sudo mount -t sysfs sys /target/sys"
  19. "sudo chroot /target"
  20. "apt-get update"
  21. "apt-get install dmraid"
  22. "apt-get install grub"
  23. "mkdir /boot/grub"
  24. "cp /usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/* /boot/grub"
  25. "grub --no-curses"
  26. "device (hd0) /dev/mapper/nvidia_cjbgcjgd"
  27. "find /boot/grub/stage1"
  28. "root (hd0,4)"
  29. "setup (hd0)"
  30. "quit"
  31. "update-grub" and said yes to creating new menu.lst file.
  32. "nano /boot/grub/menu.lst"
  33. Changed the '# groot=(hd0,0)' to '# groot=(hd0,4)'.
  34. Changed this in the boot entries below also.
  35. Added the Windows boot entry.
          * title Windows root (hd0,0) chainloader +1
  36. Changed the delay to '30' and commented the 'hiddenmenu' option.
          * Noted that savedefault was set to false.
  37. Save and exit nano.
  38. "update-grub" and kept the local file.
  39. Reboot and verify both Ubuntu and the existing Vista partition boot."

Il succo sembrerebbe quello di far fare il lavoro di riconosciemento della configurazione raid a dmraid, NON ionstallare Grub per poterlo settare alla fine della procedura.

Quello che mi preme è capire come configurare grub in maniera appropriata con la mia configurazione e anche sapere che tipo di "gestore" raid io mi ritrovo sul PC (proprio non saprei), visto che nelle istruzioni si fa riferimento a uno Nvidia..

Oltretutto, per andare piu' tranquillo, mi chiedevo se non fosse il caso di installare grup su una chiavetta USB esterna per non correre rischi con l'installazione di Vista, sopratutto il suo bootloader (che proprio non vorrei perdere).

Riassumendo mi servirebbe una mano per adattare (sempre che serva) le istruzioni per il mio laptop di cui trovate info nel mio forum (vedete link nel campo "il tuo sito").

Non sono un utente esperto, soprautto per quello che concerne Linux, ma credo di non essere troppo imbalsamato, spero di poter avere una vostra risposta e sopratutto un piccolo aiuto.
